But for Goddard, it was better than being a deputy sheriff in San Bernardino County, where the carnage he investigated made him worry about his young daughter. It was somewhat unnerving: The agents crept through swamps, confronted poachers without wearing bulletproof vests, and joined outlaw motorcycle gangs to penetrate illegal ivory-trafficking rings. In the meantime, Goddard put together a crime scene investigation kit, and spent the early '80s learning about wildlife law enforcement from the agency's special agents. ![]() It took him seven years to raise the $4.5 million needed to start the lab, and another two years to design and build the facility. In 1979, Goddard left police work for the Fish and Wildlife Service, where he was charged with developing a forensics program. In fact, the morphology lab already has a drawerful. Its scientists pioneer methods unique to animal forensics, provide legal testimony, and aren't even surprised to receive a monkey hand through the mail. It also assists the fish and wildlife departments of all 50 states, and is the official wildlife crime lab for nearly 200 countries. Now the forensic lab helps identify evidence, bring charges and obtain convictions. #Russian collection hcn. series#The laboratory is as valuable to the world's wildlife protection laws as the CSI television series is to the entertainment industry.īefore 1989, the agency relied on museums and zoos to help analyze items seized by law enforcement agents, and to testify in court against deep-pocketed poachers. The walruses, Espinoza concluded, were poached for their ivory.Įighteen years have passed since what Goddard calls the "Guts and Glory" case. But these bodies had bleached, clean neck bones - confirming that they were beheaded before being dumped into the ocean. If the walruses had been beheaded onshore, rotting tissue would still cling to their neck bones. Local Eskimos accused Russians of shooting the walruses they said they'd merely found the dead behemoths and beheaded them in order to salvage the ivory. They roved from one carcass to another, fording Arctic streams in their underwear, in hopes of discovering: Whodunit? On the bad hand, however, is that some cars just feel like hovercrafts. ![]() On the good hand, it keeps the game interesting, feeling like every car is unique, with clear pros and cons depending on the rally stage and the player’s style of driving. That calm when you find it, at one with the car, perfectly roleplaying a racing driver, is absolutely unbeatable. Playing a lot of racing games, a little too much of Forza and the F1 simulation series, it is obvious that this kind of game shines when they achieve that feeling of flow. Driving through a half-dozen-minute course can be equal parts tricky and calming, a perfect balance between challenge and beauty. Where this game shines is in the driving. The attention to detail and in-jokes are a testament to the developers’ love of motorsport, creating a love letter to rallying that feels more fitting than any WRC game.Īrt of rally captures the thrill of rallying sublimely. This displacement simulates an artificial horizon which “makes it possible to resynchronize the sight and the inner ear in less than 10 minutes and in 95% of cases”, says Citroën in the video produced to promote its innovation. She’s the mother of the Nine Muses who oversee all the arts: music, poetry, dancing, and whatnot. Her dark hair fell in ringlets around her face. She held an open book in one hand like she was about to recite a poem. In the center of the room, under the ornate domed ceiling, a ten-foot-tall statue stood on a high pedestal. Even the transients or local teenagers who’d broken in over the years didn’t care enough to bother with the books-except to use them as tinder for fires. Nobody had even bothered to sell or give away the books. I had mixed feelings about this place, but whatever you thought of libraries, there was no denying that this one was sad. On the marble floor near the exit were the remnants of an old campfire. Judging from the piles of wrappers and cans, and the articles of old clothing strewn across the furniture, we weren’t the only ones who had discovered a way in. Others were torn and strewn around, smashed by muddy footprints. Some books formed piles in the corners like snowdrifts. Stacks of books marched off in all directions. I hadn’t been there since I was a little kid. My knees were weak as I climbed into the library’s main reading room. Sam pointed the light up at a door, then bowed and extended his arm.
